Mentioned in passing by the all wise and powerful Wiggi, hybrid classes effectively combined character classes. Unlikely the uber class promoted by the less wise and powerful 3 Man, the hybrid class combines classes in a way that is both effective and balanced. Different than multiclass by virtue of the equal, steady progression in two classes simultaneously, versus the multiclass which puts you firmly in one class then introduces a second.
Please puruse the information on pages 85 to 105 of this link. Please note especially the three warnings. One, hybriding two classes in the same role gives you an equally effective character to a single role class. Two, hybriding two classes in different roles gives you a less effective, but more versatile character. Three, unlike the core classes, not all hybrid classes are created equal. Unless anyone especially objects I am open to allowing hybrids in July.
Any objections? Which hybrids look enticing to you?

Why wouldn't this work? Instead of multi-classing, allow people to uber-class. Uber-classing is choosing whatever power from whatever class you want. So you make a halfling trickster rogue and you choose a couple powers from the chaos sorcerer. Both rely on CHR and DEX so you're not weakening your character. You don't waste feats or your paragon path to accomlish the uber-class. You have a truly unique character! Think of the combos (goofy names by me)! The impotus of our conversation, check out the custom feats designed to make a ranged barbarian: the javelineer! Recently the Don and I reviewed the idea of customizing players. While I'll spare you all the details of the screaming and sobbing and tender make up, let's discuss here one of the three good ideas that sprang forth from our creative constipation. Over the past few weeks we determined that roles are the new classes. That role determines what you do, class determines how you do it and race adds flavor to the mix. We also explored optimized race/mix combos based strictly on desirable attributes. Now I want to know who does it best? Who is the ultimate defender? Who is the ultimate striker? Who is the ultimate leader? Who is the ulitmate controller? I've updated the narative for our last adventure. It's pretty broad brush strokes and I only got through Friday night's "The Meeting", but read it through and see if its how you remember it. While you're in there add your old characters to your profile so I can reference them in our story. By now you are all surely worshiping the Optimizer. You are welcome. With all this talk of roles and class what happened to race? Remember DND, the red box? You just picked your race and that was your class and role. Now race seems to be relegated to fluff. Or is it? Are there any race/class combos that dominate? What race will you play? Why did you choose it? The only thing better than an exciting sword and sorcery story is a sword and sorcery story about you! How do you become the center of attention? You could drink a quart of mead and insist your dwarf can fly (ahem), or you could write yourself into the story. I am excited to start our Points of Light Wiki. Points of Light, if you don't recall, is what DND refers to as the default setting for 4E and the name of our current campaign. |
