Howdy! After a succesful 2009 campaign, our thoughts, feelings and memories captured for posterity on our little blog, we returned to our families and businesses to level up our life. Now at the half way point between Nerd Con 2009 and 2010 we begin the discussion anew. Where to begin?
Today we will start the Challenger Series. The Challenger Series will be a few discussions that challenge the preconceptions of the rules and the way they work. Not meant to be devisive, the Challenger Series attempts to turn preconceptions on their heads to see, if from a different perspective, a familiar ground can be more effeciently, or more funnly, covered.
Our first discussion is Challenger Series: Initiative. One observation from last year is that high dexterity first striker types felt pressured to delay their attacks until the low dexterity slow-to-go defender types could get into position. That in effect they were loosing an advantage inherent to their build, or, at least, not being as cool as they imagined they could be. So how would you respond to this dilema?
a. Too bad. Those are the rules and the advantage of working as a team outweighs the strikers' coolness.
b. It's not a problem. The advantage of having the highest initiative is not going first, but controling when you go. A high initiative guy could delay if it is to the party's advantage, or he could go if getting off first is to the party's advantage.
c. Hmmm... I think it kind of blows. He should be able to get the first strike off while not putting himself or the party at a great disadvantage, and this is how I would fix it....
d. Other (for Don).
Please weigh in with your thoughts on the subject. I want to gauge two things: how many people think it's a problem and if anybody has a constructive idea. Also, please suggest what other topics you would like to cover in the Challenger Series. Look forward to hearing from you!
