Our trip to the Mayo for my wife's heart surgery has come and gone. The surgery went well and she was discharged early. We returned home Thursday to find our darling girls safe and sound in the capable care of my dad, David (aka. Greg or the Gerb). Now with David on his way home to Texas and Yumi's mom and dad in from Chicago I stopped by the coffee shop for a little peace of mind.
I sat on a stool and checked a couple role playing blogs on my iPhone while I patiently waited for my caffinated slice of heaven. Then to my surprise I heard the cashier say to the barista, "Zombies don't kill themselves." I am not certain in what context the statement was made, but it made me smile and think of y'all. For while Nerd Con 2009 is delayed it is not defeated if for no other reason than zombies don't kill themselves.
Since our blog began in April we have covered a lot of ground. From Don's mom to optimized builds to daughters and DND to house rules to magic items to role playing to the campaign to motivations and back to Don's mom again. It's been a lot of fun writing with y'all and I truly look forward to jotting down my thoughts and getting your feed back as inspiration strikes.
While at the coffee shop the blog I read posed an interesting question which I thought I might ask you. Some players enjoy Roll playing, and some players enjoy Role playing. Roll players enjoy using rolls of dice, maximized character builds and masterful battle plans to overcome obstacles, most of which are combat oriented. Role players enjoy using deep character concepts, creativity, story telling, tense negotiations, flowery speeches, well connected associates and cunning diplomacy to overcome obstacles, most of which are socialy oriented. So, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being Role player only and 10 being Roll player only, where would you rate yourself? No answer is wrong-- even if Don says it is! And a follow up question is do you feel we could use more Role playing (social interactions and problem solving) or Roll playing (combat or other problems solved mostly with dice) in our little weekend drinking game?

Good thoughtful answer. I would personaly rate the campaign a 7 or 8, but with more players Role playing we could certainly get it to a 5 if that's what we're after.

And just so nobody gets the wrong idea, I do worry about my story, and I do worry about your fun, but I do not worry about you all dying. That you get to worry about. Mwa ha ha!

Death is but a beginning.

Yes, with the new Revenant option death is just a begining. But that's for a different post. The question here, Wook Dog, is what's your number?

ummm i think we all know i like to break things, wold have to say i am a Roll player, 8 or a 9. I do enjoy listening to the backstory and the role playing of others but i just very seldom get into it myself.

Depends on what role/roll playing opportunities there are. I like doing research on spec's and doing some min/maxing, but I also like coming up with a background story. Sometimes I may go a bit overboard with a character's morals & principles (remember a ranger & a CN barbarian?) I'll just ride the fence and say 5.

Does fence riding make your butt sore? Sounds like adding more role playing would be good for Wiggi and Wookie, and if General enjoys watching that would work well. Target a 6 or 7?

Lube before then powder after. Proper breathing and stretching helps, too. So I hear.

I actualy wouldn't disagree too much. I would put Wade and Kurt in a unique category of "will role play well when prompted". And I think Nat wants to join that team, too.

Oh shit yeah nat sry i forgot you but I would actually put you closer to a 5-6. You have a tendency to get hung up in story even at the expense of playability. ( a shadowrun character with a 1 body???) for example but there have been others

I'm getting a littled worried about this sudden interest in role playing. You guys aren't going to show in costumes are you?
