Healing surges in the RAW are the amount of times you can be healed before an extended rest. In a blog I read of a house rule that facinated me. Redefine healing surges to simply surges. Surges are the ability to dig down deep and do something exceptional. The best example was using surges to recharge encounter powers. The outcome, the poster felt, was sped up combat. Players could endure less damage and deal more damage. Overall, it sounded pretty sweet. What do you think?

Subverting the RAW? count me in, sign me up, I'm in line, I want some cool-aid, and any other idioms you can come up with for YES.

I likey. We'd probably want to test play some though. As much as I like plowing through all the monsters you cook up, if it overbalanced the game it might be less fun.

Alright, kids. The "..." indicates that you are to give me other ideas I haven't already thought of. Though recharging encounter powers is cool, straight forward and helpful.

Game balance could be an issue. Though, some baddies have surges, especialy the really big ones.

well the bad guys would have to check with their union reps and get an ok before using a surge because of course and surge use has to be pre-approved by corporate or there will be hell to pay

Recharging encounter powers is a really cool effect. You could even recharge dailies for say 2 healing surges.

The game balance issue is a non factor you can always Add a baddie or give em more HP. I think it does however open up the characters to more options in combat.

Great ideas! Surges to be used for healing, recharge an encounter and make an extra save. Don't overlap with action points because ap's get you an extra standard action. The way the adventure is set up no need to recharge dailies because there is only one combat a day. Dailies become encounter powers that can't recharge basicly. And game balance is the DM's problem. Poor bastard.

I still see Surges being WAY more powerfull that piddly ass little APs You essentially get 1 AP per day so you can take 1 extra action per day?? Big friggin whoop.

We could only allow one encounter surge per day. Then two attacks (using ap) is still more powerful than using the same encounter power twice in one encounter (using surge). Remember, the surge does not give you an extra attack. It just gives you a second use of the same power.

Dont let me be missunderstood I LIKE THE IDEA. I just think the idea is lessening the importance of the AP. Are we suggesting using surges whenever we want or still only when a power or other action allows us to use it?

I vote you still take a potion of healing or whatever, but catching your breath results in trying to shake off an effect (save) or getting another shot at your power attack (encounter recharge) in lieu of healing.

So only when something allows you to use a healing surge normally. Sounds

Love it. It solves the problem we often have of blowing our powers in the first or second fight, then having to rush to the next fight as we often do with nothing but Don's dick in Nat's hand.

Don, note the key word "nothing". We need something IN ADDITION to your dick in Nat's hand. DDINH is just standard for any encounter.

ok so i should bring forceps to participate in the DDINH portion of the encounter. i have some very soft forceps, they're still metal just textured better.

You do whatever you do to use a healing surge normaly. Now, though, you get to choose hit points, recharge encounter or retry save. I think for pc's it's a move, two standards, three ass pennies and a reach around. For npc's I believe it's a free action unless they're bloodied then they actualy get an extra action and use the pc's healing surge - all of them. That sounds about right.
