Over the past few weeks we determined that roles are the new classes. That role determines what you do, class determines how you do it and race adds flavor to the mix. We also explored optimized race/mix combos based strictly on desirable attributes. Now I want to know who does it best? Who is the ultimate defender? Who is the ultimate striker? Who is the ultimate leader? Who is the ulitmate controller?
I have a preliminary list, but please don't infer that it implies some advanced scientific methodology. More like my first impressions. I'm anxious to here from those that made and played the characters to see what is their opinion.
Defender: My pick for defender is dwarf gaurdian fighter. The defender needs to have high AC and high hitpoints and be able to stand and take it. The dwarf''s bonus to CON gives him sick hitpoints and his racial abilities to not get knocked prone and to move full speed unencombered make him an ideal fighter. I prefer the gaurdian fighter class because it doesn't dable in anything else. No nature stuff, no striker stuff, no cleric stuff, no arcana stuff. They do one thing: stand their and say, "Though shall not pass!" Besides, the daily limited flight power is a must have.
Striker: My pick for striker is an elf archer ranger. Strikers are focused in doing damage. The amount of damage they do = the amount of damaged produced per round X the number of rounds damaged is produced. Tricking out a striker to do a lot of damage is easy. Keeping him on his feet without reducing his damage output is the hard part. The best solution: keep him out of harms way. A properly equiped elf archer ranger can do 95 points of damage at 4th level in one round from 200' away. Thank you and hello.
Leader: Now I'm out beyond my knowledge, but my impression would be a human cleric. The best leader is the one with live followers and that's what a cleric does.
Controller: Again, not my area of expertise, but I would go with eladrin war wizard. Wizard because it keeps the cleric and nature fluff out. War because is benefits from a high DEX which is imparative to a long lived wizard. And eladrin because they get bonuses to both INT and DEX.
Looking back at my list I see I've built every cheesy archetype available. Is that my subconscious mind striving to bring Tolkein alive, or subversive game design? Who knows?

I've updated the narative for our last adventure. It's pretty broad brush strokes and I only got through Friday night's "The Meeting", but read it through and see if its how you remember it. While you're in there add your old characters to your profile so I can reference them in our story. By now you are all surely worshiping the Optimizer. You are welcome. With all this talk of roles and class what happened to race? Remember DND, the red box? You just picked your race and that was your class and role. Now race seems to be relegated to fluff. Or is it? Are there any race/class combos that dominate? What race will you play? Why did you choose it? |
